The FAO (Food and Agriculture Organisation of the United Nations) has defined sustainability in these terms: “To be sustainable, agriculture must meet the needs of present and future generations, while ensuring profitability, environmental health and social and economic equity.”
This translates into 17 sustainable development goals. At Novogen, we believe in the importance of these goals. To achieve this, NOVOGEN is committed to act on various aspects of sustainable development as defined by the FAO: reducing poverty, eliminating hunger, promoting health and well-being, promoting decent work and economic growth, encouraging responsible consumption and production, and preserving life on Earth.

A Sustainable Breeding Program
Novogen continuously seeks to improve existing traits and develop new ones to meet the needs of the entire industry and market. Ongoing genetic progress in pure lines supports lasting benefits for current and future generations.
The continuous improvement of the genetic potential of our pure lines allows us to increase the number of eggs produced, extend the production cycle, and enhance feed efficiency. Increasing egg production through improved laying persistency and stable egg quality is key to extending commercial cycles above 100 weeks of age, delivering both economic and environmental benefits.
By producing more with less, and increasing the longevity of the hens, Novogen helps preserve natural resources and reduce ecological and carbon footprint of the egg industry.
Novogen, a pioneer in cage-free and behavior selection
For more than 15 years, Novogen has been a leader in introducing behavior in selection, including cage-free systems in the breeding program.
This approach focuses on choosing animals with behaviors suited to alternative farming methods.
The adaptive ability of our strains is tested by a variety of production conditions (e.g. feed formula and presentation, temperature and light intensity) and field-based progeny testing. In this way, Novogen’s selection process produces birds that are capable of realising their genetic potential in a variety of environments.
